At the Faculty of Biology of Baku State University (BSU), a scientific seminar titled "The Effect of Global Warming on Natural Water Resources" was presented by Farayat Ahmadova, a professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies. During the seminar, Professor Ahmadova highlighted that recent climate change-induced droughts exacerbate water scarcity issues, affecting our country. Factors such as increasing water demand, the drying up of smaller rivers that feed larger ones, water wastage, and improper usage were discussed as contributing causes.
In her presentation, Professor Ahmadova addressed the detrimental impacts of untreated sewage from various industrial enterprises and hospitals being discharged into rivers and the sea. She also discussed the ecological purity, versatility, and significance of Azerbaijan's thermal waters, known for their numerous balneological (therapeutic) properties and potential as an alternative energy source. Cold and high-temperature waters in Azerbaijan contain unique microorganisms that can influence water quality through the substances produced during microbiological processes (such as gases, salts, and minerals) and the biosynthesis of metabolic products (including antibiotics, amino acids, and vitamins).
In conclusion, the professor emphasized the necessity of organizing educational events to raise awareness about the importance of water in nature and human life, the proper management of water resources, and the negative impacts of wastewater on human health.
