BSU SCIENTIFIC SEMINAR: BIRDS OF AZERBAIJAN AND THEIR CONSERVATION
01-04-2025

A scientific seminar dedicated to April 1st – International Bird Day – was held at the Faculty of Ecology and Soil Science of Baku State University (BSU). During the seminar, Ramil Hasanov, a PhD student at the Department of Bioecology, delivered a presentation on the topic "Birds of Azerbaijan and Their Conservation."

Ramil Hasanov emphasized that Azerbaijan's geographical location, situated along important migration routes, has contributed to its rich biological diversity. Azerbaijan serves as a favorable habitat for both migratory and resident birds. Over 400 bird species from 61 families of 18 orders have been recorded in the country, with 78 of these species listed in the third edition of the "Red Book" of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The speaker discussed the role of birds in ecosystems and human life, the country's significant ornithological regions, the threats faced by birds, and the measures being taken for their conservation. He also highlighted the importance of Specially Protected Nature Areas and the role of environmental education and awareness in the protection of avian fauna.

Furthermore, Ramil Hasanov shared the results of monitoring conducted in various regions of the country during 2024-2025. He noted that 152 bird species were recorded, 22 of which, with various conservation statuses, were included in the "Red Book." He also touched on the impact of climate change on bird migration, distribution, feeding, and life activities. Additionally, he discussed the consequences of natural and anthropogenic factors, including extinct and newly observed species in Azerbaijan, drawing attention to the research conducted in these areas.

At the end of the seminar, participants' questions were answered.
