A seminar on "Causes of Climate Change" was held at the Faculty of Biology of Baku State University (BSU), organized by the "Sustainable Harmony of Nature" club. The seminar was attended by club members and faculty members.
The event covered the general causes of climate change and the impact of these changes on Azerbaijan's biodiversity and rare species. It was noted that, like many countries around the world, Azerbaijan faces various ecological problems. The gradual increase in Earth's temperature and the reduction of atmospheric precipitation in different regions are observed as a result of global climate change, which is also evident in our country. As a result, water levels in rivers and reservoirs are decreasing. Key objectives for improving the ecological situation in the country include preventing water pollution, soil degradation, preserving biodiversity, increasing greenery, protecting air quality, cleaning soils contaminated by oil and other waste, and improving the management of industrial and household waste, including hazardous waste. The declaration of 2024 as the "Year of Solidarity for a Green World" and the hosting of the prestigious COP 29 event in the country are expected to contribute to addressing these issues.
Under the mentorship of Sevinc Mammadova from the Department of Zoology and Physiology, students Madina Abdurzayeva, Kifayat Aliyeva, Aygun Abbasova, and Telli Jafarova gave presentations on topics such as greenhouse effects, glaciers, human activities, Azerbaijan's green pledges, and the goals of the Conference of the Parties.
The seminar concluded with a discussion involving both faculty and students on the topic.
