Collaborative sturgeon genome analysis conducted with BSU
20-05-2024

In collaboration with Baku State University (BSU), "LU-MUN HOLDING", Izmir Institute of High Technology, "Bayramlı Group", and Turkey's "Letgen Biotechnology" companies, research was conducted to investigate the genetic characteristics of sturgeon populations inhabiting the Azerbaijani portion of the Caspian Sea and to validate their endemic status through scientific inquiry. Genome analysis of these sturgeon species was undertaken.

Microsatellite analysis was conducted on the Sturgeon Acipenser species, examining 90 alleles across 6 microsatellite loci in 125 individuals. These genetic analyses served as the foundation for confirming the Azerbaijani origin of Caspian sturgeon through scientific research and establishing protocols for their identification. The current methodology ensures accurate detection of pure species and hybrids, assuring the authenticity of caviar sourced from these sturgeon.

Under the project's framework, in collaboration with BSU and the "Bayramlı Group", efforts are underway to collect samples and geographically map sturgeon populations to facilitate the completion of genetic analyses for Azerbaijani endemic sturgeon.
