05-05-2023

As part of the Science Festival commemorating the 100th anniversary of National Leader Heydar Aliyev at Baku State University (BSU), Professor Michael Lepek from the Doerr School of Sustainability and the Faculty of Engineering at Stanford University delivered a master lecture. The event, organized by BSU's Technology Transfer and Innovation Department and SABAH.lab, focused on the theme "The Role of Scientists and Engineers in Advancing the Sustainability of Our Planet."

During his lecture, Michael Lepek discussed innovative approaches to addressing sustainability, a critical issue in contemporary times. He highlighted the US National Academy of Engineering's perspective on sustainability challenges, emphasizing the multidimensionality and scale of these issues. Lepek introduced the concept of "metastructure," which encompasses physical infrastructures, digital information technologies, financing mechanisms, business models, partnerships, and institutions necessary for collaborative projects. This holistic framework, termed "metastructure" by Stanford researchers, involves utilizing traditional infrastructure systems in novel and innovative ways, a concept currently employed by businesses like Uber and Kickstarter.

Professor Michael Lepek commended Azerbaijan, acknowledging its significant potential in effectively harnessing energy resources in the future. The lecture concluded with Professor Lepek addressing various questions posed by the engaged student audience.
