Scientific seminar on cancer genome and diagnostics at BSU
02-06-2023

A scientific seminar on "Cancer: genome, diagnosis, therapy methods" was held under the organization of the Student Scientific Society (TEC) of the Faculty of Biology of Baku State University (BSU).

Speaking at the scientific seminar, Nurlan Amrahov, head of the Faculty of Biology of TEC, teacher of the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies, said that healthy cells are renewed with the ability to divide, replace dead cells and restore tissue damage. This division and reproduction is controlled by DNA and has a certain order. However, due to some damage to the DNA, some cells divide and multiply uncontrollably. These cells combine to form tumors. Tumors that can occur in various tissues and organs of our body are divided into benign and malignant forms. As malignant tumors grow, they damage normal tissues and the disease we call cancer occurs. Sometimes, cancer cells spread through blood and lymph circulation to tissues other than the one where they originated, causing the disease to spread to other parts of the body. Cancer is the leading cause of death in the world after cardiovascular diseases.

Third-year students Afsana Bakhishzade, Sona Dunyamaliyeva, Laman Aghayeva and Gulanbar Ahmadova gave the audience extensive information about cancer, therapy methods, scientific achievements in this field and the new treatment method used in cancer - immunotherapy, CAR-T and CRISPR-Cas9. .

In the end, the dean of the faculty, Afat Mammadova, noted the importance of holding such seminars and raising awareness about cancer.
