Scientific seminar on the prospects of nanoparticle application in medicine at BSU
24-10-2023

A scientific seminar focusing on "green synthesis, characterization, and potential applications of nanoparticles in medicine" took place at the Faculty of Biology at Baku State University (BSU).

During the seminar, Adican Mehmet Tevfik, a doctoral candidate from the Department of Biophysics and Biochemistry and a staff member at Mardin Artuklu University in Turkey, delivered a presentation on the subject.

Adican Mehmet Tevfik highlighted the prevalent utilization of biological entities in synthesizing metal nanoparticles, emphasizing the significance of "green synthesis" among these methods. He emphasized that this approach offers distinct advantages, as it eschews the use of toxic chemicals, making it environmentally friendly and economically advantageous. Tevfik further explained that biomolecules, secondary metabolites, phenolic compounds, alcohols, flavonoids, and phytochemicals containing carbonyl groups present in plants efficiently reduce metal ions to nanoparticles.

The researcher conducted a study comparing the properties of gold (Au) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles using various analytical techniques such as UV-vis spectrophotometry, FT-IR spectroscopy, EDX, XRD analysis, TEM, SEM, and other microscopy methods to determine their sizes, shapes, charges, and zeta potential. Additionally, the cytotoxic effects of Au and Ag nanoparticles synthesized with the aqueous extract of St. John's wort (Hypericum triquetrifolium turra) on both healthy and tumor cell lines were investigated. Furthermore, the researcher reviewed and compared the effects of nanoparticles derived from aqueous extracts of different plants, with varying metallic compositions, on healthy and tumor cells.

Drawing from the findings, the doctoral candidate underscored the imminent widespread utilization of metal nanoparticles in medicine. Finally, the speaker addressed inquiries from the seminar attendees.
