Study of the natural vegetation of the Caspian Coast underway at BSU
29-05-2025

A scientific seminar titled “Natural Vegetation of the Caspian Coast: Its Classification, Mapping, and Phytosociological Characteristics” was held at the Faculty of Biology of Baku State University (BSU).

Dr. Humira Huseynova, a professor at the Department of Botany and Plant Physiology and Doctor of Biological Sciences, delivered a presentation on the topic. She provided information on the rich biodiversity, ecological and geobotanical features of the natural vegetation cover along the Caspian coast, the classification of phytocoenoses, and their mapping using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies. It was noted that the vegetation of the Caspian coastline is shaped by climate conditions, relief, soil composition, and anthropogenic factors. The area is divided into six main ecological-geobotanical zones: forest, shrubland, semi-desert, desert, coastal sandy desert (psammophytic), and wetland vegetation. Each zone has its own distinctive biomorphological structure, dominant species, and ecological requirements.

Research has identified 25 formation classes, 125 formation groups, and 179 associations along the Caspian coast. This classification reflects the phytosociological structure of ecosystems and various levels of biodiversity organization. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of vegetation morphology, functional structure, and ecological roles.

The seminar also addressed the ecological-geobotanical mapping process. Maps at a 1:200,000 scale have been developed using modern GIS and computer modeling tools. These maps accurately represent the geographical distribution and zonal/intrazonal characteristics of phytocoenoses and provide an essential scientific basis for biodiversity conservation, natural resource management, and environmental monitoring of territories.

The seminar concluded with discussions and answers to numerous questions from students.
