A presentation ceremony was held at ADA University for the Azerbaijani version of the "Climate Change Guide for Legislators," a new resource for members of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan, government bodies, and decision-makers.
The guide, first published in October of this year by the "Peers for the Planet" group and the University of Exeter at the UK Parliament, has been translated into Azerbaijani by GLOBE International and is being presented within the framework of COP29.
The guide, developed by a group of distinguished scientific experts and organizations, including the University of Exeter, where the world’s leading 100 climate scientists work, provides policymakers with the latest knowledge on climate change.
The presentation ceremony was attended by Baku State University (BSU) Rector Elchin Babayev, National Assembly Deputy and GLOBE Parliament Champion for COP29 Fariz Ismayilzadeh, GLOBE International President Malini Mehra, and Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Exeter, Director of Green Future Solutions, Stuart Brockhurst.
In his speech, BSU Rector Elchin Babayev, who is also the author of the guide’s preface, emphasized that climate change, one of the greatest challenges facing the world today, requires solidarity among all nations to ensure a sustainable future. He highlighted that Azerbaijan's active participation in this global struggle has been made possible due to the purposeful policies and large-scale initiatives implemented by the government. The declaration of 2024 as the "Year of Solidarity for a Green World" by the Republic of Azerbaijan further demonstrates the state's resolute stance on this issue. The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will be held in Baku, reaffirms Azerbaijan's key role in global climate cooperation. This international event provides a unique opportunity to present Azerbaijan’s achievements in combating climate change and the steps it plans to take to the international community.
The Rector also noted that the "Climate Change Guide for Legislators" aims to provide parliamentarians and other stakeholders with scientific information on the causes, consequences, and solutions to climate change, supporting them in the decision-making process. It offers comprehensive insights into possible measures and strategies to address this global issue: "Climate change affects not only ecosystems and weather patterns but also the economy, public health, energy security, and global political relations. Understanding these aspects is crucial for developing large-scale legislative initiatives and effective policies. This publication will play a significant role in shaping modern and effective policies both nationally and internationally. It will help raise awareness among a broad audience, including students in relevant fields, and serve as a reliable resource for academic staff and researchers."
The event also featured virtual participation from Baroness Helen Hayman, Chair of the UK Parliament’s "Peers for the Planet" cross-party climate and nature group, and Lisa Roberts, President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Exeter.
This event provided an opportunity to connect with parliamentarians, climate experts participating in COP29, and other VIPs, strengthening efforts in climate change cooperation and the application of COP29 outcomes.
