Training at BSU: Phylogenetic analysis: From theory to practice
07-06-2024

The Student Scientific Society of Baku State University (BSU) organized a training session titled "Phylogenetic Analysis: From Theory to Practice." Ulkar Huseynova-Mustafayeva, a researcher at the International Computer Genomics Laboratory of the Institute of Genetic Resources under the Ministry of Science and Education, led the session. She explained that phylogenetics is a branch of biological systematics that determines and analyzes evolutionary relationships among modern and extinct organisms. According to evolutionary theory, species that exhibit similarities are likely to share common origins or ancestors. Consequently, the relationships established through phylogenetics typically outline the evolutionary history of a biological species.

During the training, Huseynova-Mustafayeva guided the students in visually constructing a phylogenetic tree. The students gained hands-on experience in understanding and modifying phylogenetic trees using various software tools, thereby enhancing their comprehension of the evolutionary histories of different organisms.
