BSU hosts scientific and practical seminar on overcoming addiction

The Department of Psychology at Baku State University (BSU) organized a scientific and practical seminar entitled “From Addiction to Freedom” to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed annually on 26 June.

Opening the event, Rovshan Javadov, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Psychology, discussed the social and psychological challenges posed by drug addiction and drug trafficking. He emphasized the importance of awareness-raising initiatives in protecting young people from harmful habits and highlighted the responsibility of higher education institutions in promoting informed and healthy lifestyles among students.

Sakhavat Aliyeva, Head of the Department of Psychology, noted that addiction is not only a medical issue but also has significant psychological and social dimensions. She stressed the need for a multidisciplinary approach and underlined the value of bringing together experts from different fields to address the issue comprehensively.

Professor Araz Aliquliyev, Doctor of Medical Sciences, delivered a presentation on “Modern Treatment Methods for Psychoactive Substance Addiction.” His lecture covered the mechanisms of addiction, contemporary treatment approaches, the rehabilitation process, and the importance of early intervention.

The seminar also featured presentations by moderator Ayten Alishanli, lecturer at the Department of Psychology; Yavar Mammadova, Chief Specialist of the Continuing Education Department at the Academy of the State Customs Committee and Lieutenant Colonel of the Customs Service; Ayten Mutallimzade, lecturer at the Department of Psychology; Javad Javadov, psychologist and psychotherapist at the Baku Psychology Center; Sevila Khalilova, a fourth-year BSU psychology student; and social worker Banuchichek Baghirova. The speakers addressed topics including current trends in drug trafficking, multidisciplinary strategies for combating substance addiction, the role of psychotherapy, and the importance of social work in rehabilitation.

As part of the event, participants watched a video about a hotline service, a video report featuring interviews with former drug users, and a role-play performance based on real-life cases.

The seminar concluded with a panel discussion, during which participants had the opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussions with the speakers.
