08-05-2026

The Faculty of Oriental Studies at Baku State University (BSU) hosted a scientific seminar as part of the Year of Urban Planning and Architecture. The seminar featured a presentation by Aysel Huseynova, a lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture of the Azerbaijan State Academy of Fine Arts, entitled "History, Ideology, and Space: The Formation of Architecture in Eastern Countries."

The speaker examined how historical and ideological contexts have shaped architectural development in Eastern societies. Particular attention was given to Islamic architecture, with a comparative analysis of the Ottoman and Safavid architectural traditions, highlighting both their shared influences and distinctive features in spatial organization, minaret design, and compositional principles.

The seminar also explored the role of ideology in the development of Azerbaijani architecture. Participants discussed the architectural and urban planning transformations that took place during the leadership of National Leader Heydar Aliyev, emphasizing efforts to strengthen national identity through architecture. Landmark projects, including the Nizami Metro Station, were presented as examples of this approach.

In addition, discussions addressed the Turkic-Islamic identity of Baku, the phenomenological interpretation of urban space, and the concept of urban ambience. The seminar concluded with an analysis of contemporary urban planning principles, emphasizing people-centered urban development, the preservation of historical heritage, and the harmonious integration of tradition with modern architecture. Participants stressed that safeguarding a city's historical memory and identity should remain a key priority in sustainable urban development.
