BSU seminar explores the effects of plant-derived nanoparticles on living systems
23-06-2026

The Faculty of Biology at Baku State University (BSU) hosted a scientific seminar titled “Biochemical Characteristics of the Effects of Plant-Derived Nanoparticles on Living Systems.”

The seminar was delivered by Associate Professor Sabina Omarova from the Department of Biophysics and Biochemistry, who presented an overview of green synthesis methods for producing plant-derived nanoparticles, modern analytical techniques used to investigate their physicochemical properties, and the mechanisms through which these nanoparticles interact with various living systems.

During the presentation, the results of studies conducted on unicellular algae, wheat seedlings, and fish were discussed. The findings demonstrated that nanoparticles exert different effects on the enzymatic components of antioxidant defense systems involved in protecting living organisms against oxidative stress.

Associate Professor Omarova also presented research findings on silver nanoparticles synthesized using extracts of thyme, a plant widely distributed in Azerbaijan’s flora. The study examined the influence of these nanoparticles on the antioxidant defense mechanisms of different living systems and highlighted the ecological and toxicological significance of the research.

The seminar concluded with a question-and-answer session, followed by in-depth scientific discussions on future research directions and the practical applications of the study’s findings.
