BSU to launch master’s specialization in Petroleum Basin Geology
24-06-2026

Baku State University (BSU) will introduce a new master’s specialization in Petroleum Basin Geology, one of the strategic fields of geological science, to prepare highly qualified specialists for the energy and geoscience sectors.

The program will provide students with comprehensive knowledge of the formation, generation, migration, accumulation, and preservation of oil and natural gas, as well as the geological structure, evolutionary history, and development of sedimentary basins where hydrocarbons occur. The curriculum will cover the tectonic framework, stratigraphy, sedimentological characteristics, paleogeographic evolution, and geodynamic development of petroleum basins.

A key component of the program will be the integrated analysis and modeling of petroleum systems. Students will develop theoretical and practical expertise in constructing three-dimensional geological models by integrating geological, geophysical, and geochemical data. They will also gain skills in predicting hydrocarbon potential, exploring new deposits, and improving the assessment of existing oil and gas fields.

The specialization will include courses such as Research Methodology, Academic Writing and Scientific Communication, Modern Information Technologies in Geology, GIS and Geological Databases, Petroleum Basin Geology, Sedimentary Basin Analysis, Petroleum Geology, Gas Geology, Petroleum and Gas Geochemistry, Structural Geology and Tectonics, Geological Modeling of Hydrocarbon Reservoirs, Reservoir Petrophysics, Resource Estimation and Evaluation, Geophysical Exploration Methods, Seismic Data Interpretation, Drilling Geology, and Geological Foundations of Field Development.

Graduates will be qualified to pursue careers at SOCAR and its affiliated enterprises, oil and gas exploration and production companies, geological and geophysical service organizations, research institutes, geological modeling and consulting companies, as well as universities and research centers.

The new master’s specialization aims to educate professionals capable of conducting comprehensive analyses of petroleum basin geology, interpreting geological and geophysical data, and scientifically evaluating hydrocarbon resources to support the sustainable development of the energy sector.
