Dedicated Mandatory Training on Environmental Sustainability for Staff and Students
12-12-2025

Baku State University provides dedicated mandatory trainings on environmental aspects of sustainability for staff members, including both academic (faculty) and professional staff, and students. These mandatory training activities are organized through workshops, seminars, conferences, and online learning initiatives designed to increase environmental awareness and promote sustainable practices across university operations.

The mandatory training programs focus on strengthening institutional capacity for sustainability and supporting the integration of environmental responsibility into teaching, research, and administrative activities.

Key Training Topics

Environmental sustainability training typically covers:

  • Climate change awareness and environmental responsibility

  • Energy efficiency and resource conservation

  • Sustainable waste management and recycling practices

  • Green campus initiatives and environmental protection

  • Integration of sustainability principles into teaching, research, and administrative processes

  • Renewable energy and biodiversity conservation

  • Environmental policy and sustainable development strategies

These training initiatives aim to enhance staff knowledge and skills in implementing environmentally responsible practices across the university, contributing to the institution’s sustainability strategy and supporting the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Participation in sustainability-focused training activities helps cultivate a culture of environmental responsibility within the academic community, encouraging staff members to incorporate sustainability principles into curriculum design, research activities, campus management, and decision-making processes.

Examples of Sustainability Training and Awareness Activities

A number of initiatives demonstrate the university’s commitment to sustainability education and staff development:

  • Training on “Integration of Sustainable Development Goals into Teaching and Research Processes” organized by the Quality Assurance Center.

  • Joint training with Satbayev University on the implementation of SDGs in higher education institutions.

  • Awareness sessions on climate change, biodiversity conservation, and renewable energy organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

  • Sustainability awareness events such as SDG Week, recycling awareness activities, and climate action events organized across faculties.

  • Masterclasses and seminars on renewable energy development, biodiversity conservation, ecological protection, and environmental crime prevention.

  • International conferences and scientific seminars addressing food and water security, climate change impacts, and sustainable environmental management.

Through these activities, the university ensures that both academic and professional staff and students remain informed about current environmental challenges and sustainable development practices, enabling them to actively contribute to institutional sustainability goals.

Although sustainability training is delivered through multiple institutional initiatives rather than a single centralized program, staff members and students typically participate in approximately 6–10 hours of environmental sustainability–related training and awareness activities per year. This estimate includes participation in:

  • Workshops and training sessions on integration of sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into teaching and research

  • Seminars and conferences addressing climate change, biodiversity conservation, and environmental protection

  • Awareness events related to recycling, sustainable resource management, and green campus initiatives

  • Expert lectures and masterclasses on renewable energy and environmental management

  • Institutional activities organized during SDG Week and other sustainability-focused events

These training opportunities are organized by different units of the university, including the Quality Assurance Center, academic faculties, and student organizations, often in collaboration with external partners such as the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan and international academic partners.
